Must Eat Food in Ipoh

When I am in Ipoh, I must eat the Ipoh Bean Sprout Chicken. There are a couple of Shop, that have been selling this dish, all located a pebble throw away from each other, Just Point your Garmin GPS to Lou Wong Tauge Ayam Kuetiau, the address is Jalan Yau Tet Shin, is a short distance from the gps location at the bottom.



the 4 adults, 5 child and a baby meal cost us around RM90, for 2 standards plates of Chicken, 2 plates of beansprouts, 2 bowls of pork and fish ball soup, 8 plates of rice and 2 bowls of koey teow and the drinks ...

We eat in the restaurant with a air con section, not that it did any good. other then that we have the choice of on the road alfresco.



Please note, your choice of drinks is sorely limited to either longan drink or herbal drink ......

I also found a new place to visit on my next trip down, A Herbal Tea shop, a Glass of Ginseng Herbal Tea cost me Rm1.50, GPS location is N 04,35,101 E 101,05,104, just a road away from the Ipoh Koey Teow ...

Hawker food along Federal Road 1, at Sg Bakap Village

If you are looking for hawker food in the evening when passing by Sg Bakap, along the Federal road 1, 500 food court is a good place to stop, operating from 7pm till 12 + midnight, It offer all the usual food found in a penang food court, but it may be serve with a twist.


Wan Tan Mee - RM2.80 per, ok


Koey Teow Soup, with all pork spare parts, RM4.00 pricy but good, one SPS version


Dim Sum - RM14 for the lot above, Look commercial, but very nice, the chili sauce need improvement.

Satay Chicken - RM10 for 20 stick, good
Hokkian Mee, Penang Prawn Mee for those non Penang Lang RM3.20 cheep ok

Char Koey Teow - RM??? OK buleh makan .......

Ipoh Famous Bean Sprout Chicken

Its a family tradition that if we drive past Ipoh, State of Perak Capital, (those ancient days with out the north south highway) it's a must to stop for a meal of the Famous Ipoh Koey Teow Soup. Now having my own kids, I am trying to keep to that tradition.

Passing by Ipoh, in the early evening, on the way down from Cameron Highlands, we stop in Ipoh for a early dinner, for Ipoh Famous Bean Sprout Chicken, instead of the Ipoh Koey Teow soup as the Kopi tiam serving that is close at Night.

Thanks to Garmin XT installed in my Nokia 5800, I manage to locate the famous Lou Wong Taugeh Ayam shop at Jalau Yau Tet Shin, N04,35,640 E 101,05,058, the most popular of the 3 Beansprout co-located at this road junction. Unfortunately it was close, so we just when to the other shop.

We order 1/2 a chicken, 1 small beansprouts, 1 Fish ball soup, 3 rice, 2 bowl of koey teow, 2 longan drink, and 3 plain water, total damage came to RM41.


Wife love the koey teow, super smooth, I found the rice a just tad under cook, The Chicken was nicely cook, but (being Kampong Chicken?) a bit on the hard side. The Bean Sprout was perfectly cook, crunchy!

Just opposite here, there is also a shop selling the Famous Ipoh Salt Bake Chicken. As you can see in the above photo there is suppose to be a Pasar Malam that night at this location (Man setting up his tent), but unfortunate due to bad weather arriving (see the black clouds) we have to leave.

Road side Lime Stone Hills

Ipoh is famous for its Crunchy Beansprouts, Smooth Koey Teow, Salt Bake Chicken and also I heard Fish Noodles (Actual noodles make with mince fish). Its also famous for Chinese Temples in Lime Stone Hills. Am Planning to Visit. It will all depend on timing! Juggleling the schedule of 3 children is not a joke.

With all the limestone hill around and practically right at the roadside, Ipoh have the potential to be "Haven" for Rock Climbing in Peninsular Malaysia. Anyway that is not my decision to make. Bye.

Grand Welesley Restaurant

When one is a island boy, searching for respectable eats and island price especially for hawker food is difficult, some how or other by crossing the channel either the price increase or the quality drops. One of the few place I manage to find respectable food and ok prices around Seberang Prai, Butterworth, is this Grand Welesley Restaurant, some where behind Pearl View Hotel at Chai Ling Parkm not too far away from the Chai Ling Park wai sik kai (street of food)

Food in general is Ok in this area and in this kopi tiam......... with a few lemons here and there.

Wan Tan Mee, with starch gravy, not my favorite version by edible.
Pork satay, one of the very few places in the entire penang that serve this dish, good ......
Koey Teow Thng, one of the few on the main land that use duck meat ......
Ho Chen, Oyster Omellette, almost as good as the good ho chen on the Island, a must eat at this place ..... serve on a bed of lettuce .....
The evergreen Chicken Rice ...... a bitter lemon .......... not my cup of tea ......

Restaurant Tingkat Lima for Nibong Tebal Koey Teow Th’ng

This night eatery is in the ground floor of a 5 story building, hence it very imaginative name of Restaurant Five “Floors”. It is located at the Jalan Sg Daun area of Nibong Tebal Town, and is right at the Night Market “Street” every Sunday. I will usually have my dinner here just before walking it off at the Night Market which stretch around 500 meters

This Kopi Tiam offer a verity of food, however what good here is the Nibong Tebal Koey Teow which in my opinion is just about as good at the one in Nibong Tebal Town (link) which is only open during lunch time. Here and There is exactly the same with various pork spare parts, meat and skin, Yummy.

Next is the Hokkian Char KL Style, For this visit I am disappointed as the normal chilli is not serve, however the thick round rice noodles in darksauce with pork fat crotons, vegetables and meat did not disappoint . Frankly speaking you will be hard press to find this dish in Penang though its very common in KL. Asking for this dish in Penang will get you the Penang Style of Fried Hokkian Mee.

Char Koey Teow here is usually also not bad when compared with Penang. Not this trip though, Must be due to the New Year Season.

For those passing by on Sunday this is a excellent place to dine on some good food and to go for a walk, it’s the highlight of the week for the folks here anyway. For those who cannot make it for Lunch Koey Teow Th’ng you now have a second choice There is a Fun Fair going on next to the Kopi Tiam currently that why I am jumping que on my postings.

Nibong Tebal Koey Teow Th’ng

Koey Teow Th’ng when translated become Broad flat rice noodles in Soup, is a typical Chinese Dish found in many Coffee Shops, Street Stall around in Malaysia. You can usually find this dish for breakfast, lunch and tea, and in some place for dinner.

The Rice Noodles are Blanche in boiling water and is serve with a soup, accompanied with various boiled meats, innards or spare parts, seafood, vegetable. There is a version that the accompaniments are boiled together with the Noodles which make it a fresher and tastier dish.

This is the version that is served in Tick Kee Coffee Shop, and they do a good job here. Both of us had a Large bowl, which come at RM5.00 per bowl, but is full of pork meat, innards, prawns, breansprouts and the koey teow of course. It’s one of the best I have tasted, together with it's giant dish of chillies sauce. They do the Koey Teow here like how Beef Koey Teow Soup is serve. Close Monday, Open for Lunch Only.

This coffee shop is located along a narrow lane, Lorong Siong Right in the Middle of Nibong Tebal Town. It is advisable to park and walk in. Please see attach Map to the location for those without GPS and for those with GPS and with Malsingmap, look for Tick Kee Coffee Shop in the Point of Interest.
