Best Tosai in Penang by @snapshots

New Location GPS Cordinates N 05, 10, 243 E 100, 28, 329!

Its sad when some thing heritage have to be demolish in name of progress. The Old Heritage building of Nibong Tebal Railway Station was recently demolish in name of progress for the Double Tracking Process, with it the Best Tosia in Penang th Famous NT Railway Station Tosia is no more.

However the owner of the stall have decided to set up shop after a two weeks break, (thank god, my stomach was asking for a tosai), at the above coordinates, for those with out GPS, its not hard, Its located near the Nibong Tebal St Anthony Church (corner of Jalan Victoria)

As you enter NT town, after the first traffic light, after Maybank, at the T Junction, turn right, go straight for around half a km its a corner terrace house on your left.

The Church.

The tosai is just as good, the place even more comfortable and cleaner, the shop is currently work in progress, he just have set up shop and making plans how to set up the place, He is getting a new group of customers (of church and market goers, NT Market is just a stone throw away), and that the old customers is slowly finding out that he is at this location, further it seem that there is a chinese newspaper report that he is missing after the railway station demolish! All the best for him at this new location.

He is currently operating from 7am till 2 pm daily, and have plans to add in more verity of food.

Good Eats at Taiping, Wan Tan Mee

to conclude my series of blog post on my trip to Taiping,

My memories of Taiping for food is a Kai Si Koey Teow Thng,( Chicken Meat Flat Rice Noodle in Soup) located some where in town. I thought i knew where it was but this trip i cannot find it.

So for food after the long walk at the Zoo, I when food hunting, What funny is that there is no food court over looking the Taiping Lakes, the closest is this Restaurant Taman Tasik, a food court located a little a away from the lake but with no view of the lake.,

It has a car park over looking the lake though. and it look like it cater for a evening and late nite business. There were a lot of stalls offering thypical Hawkers food, but most were close at around 4pm.

GPS Location : N04.51.059 E100.44.764

Food Court Interior .

Wan Tan Mee

The Wan Tan mee was surpricingly nice, done exactly to my specification. So nice that the whole family ended up having Wan Tan Mee. The Char Siew could do with a improvement though.

Rojak

Well not bad for Taiping.

Penang Road Chendol

Penang Road Chendol @ snapshots

One of Penang Heritage Food Icons is the Chendol found at Penang Road. Chendol is basically Pandan “Jelly” with coconut milk and gula Melaka (dark suger) with shaven ice. So it usually eaten to cool you down after a hot day and hard day of work. There is one specific stall at an alley of Penang Road that every one make a bee line to for their chendol fix.

Chendol

Nasi Lemak - tasty

Well this post is on a branch of that stall, which is located at atrium A of Prangin Mall and funny enough it’s also located an alley off the atrium. Look for a spec shop, and there is an alley there, walk in and you will see the stall.

Ice Kacang

Penang Laksa

This stall offers more then just the famous chendol, but it’s without the ambiance of eating at the road side just like the original, hot exhaust smoke, standing and pack to the brim. Here it’s not that busy, but has consistent customers coming in for a bite, there tables and chairs and its almost air con. So this place is for those who want the comfort, the appearance of hygiene and so on.

When we stop by, we almost tried everything on the menu. :-)

Grand Welesley Restaurant

Location : N 05, 23,102 E 100,23,567

When one is a island boy, searching for respectable eats and island price especially for hawker food is difficult, some how or other by crossing the channel either the price increase or the quality drops. One of the few place I manage to find respectable food and ok prices around Seberang Prai, Butterworth, is this Grand Welesley Restaurant, some where behind Pearl View Hotel at Chai Ling Parkm not too far away from the Chai Ling Park wai sik kai (street of food)

Food in general is Ok in this area and in this kopi tiam......... with a few lemons here and there.
Wan Tan Mee, with starch gravy, not my favorite version by edible.
Pork satay, one of the very few places in the entire penang that serve this dish, good ......
Koey Teow Thng, one of the few on the main land that use duck meat ......
Ho Chen, Oyster Omellette, almost as good as the good ho chen on the Island, a must eat at this place ..... serve on a bed of lettuce .....
The evergreen Chicken Rice ...... a bitter lemon .......... not my cup of tea ......

New World Park, The Old Coffee Shop at Swatau Lane

Some how or other having a meal at the New “New World Park” shinny and clean food court make me feel that I am missing something, even with all the good food there. So this day, when looking for some lunch I decided to head to the old coffee shop located at swatau lane instead of the new and shiny food court just to try out the hawkers that are still located here.

Swatau Lane Coffee Shop

Do you know that this coffee shop have an Air Condition Section. And now a days it’s not too busy, so it’s easy to get a table even on a Saturday lunch, or because of it being a Saturday? The Hygiene overall has also improved with clean floors and tables.

Well, the food here looks interesting especially the roast duck and the chicken rice as well as the Loh bak with the har chee (shrimp fritters), but all that will be for another time. Our Mission today were to try out the Char Koey Teow, The Hokkian Mee, The Majestic Rojak, Nonya Nasi Lemak, Ice Kachang, and Chendol.

Ice Kacang

Char Koey Teow is good, nice smoky aroma, for RM3.00 (penang price) with egg and if I am not mistaken this stall also have Char Koey Kak...

no chilly - my eldest daughter had this.

Hokkian Mee, that what penangites call Prawn Mee Soup, was ok, noodles today were to me overcook, and I think he try too hard, My Medium Bowl for RM3/- was choke full of “other” ingredients usually not found in Hokkian Mee.

The Majestic Rojak, is still the best here, nice thick Rojak paste with all the fruits, and reasonably price too. Best in Penang, what so special, the sauce is pour on top, not mix in.

Nonya Nasi Lemak, RM 2.80 for Super Fragrant Nasi Lemak rice, serve with (our choice) of Sambal Har Bee, Curry Potato and Ikan Belis. Yummy, Hard to find Nonya Nasi Lemak in Penang now a days. less spicy ......

Ice Kacang, and Chendol, yummy. I still feel that is still the best here ........ especially not Its not too busy and there is always the air con section which is a one up over the food court. Unfortunately now we have lesser choice here, but for the Majestic Rojak
