Nokia 5800 - Ovi Store by Nokia and Free E Books Apps

Nokia 5800 - Ovi Store by Nokia and Free E Books Apps

@snapshots

All Ovi review here.

If I am not mistaken Nokia open Ovi Store, a place where you can get some apps, some free, some you pay for, as an answer to Apple Iphone Store. Frankly while it registered in my brain, I did not pay any attention to it till this year where Nokia announce free life time turn by turn navigation.

Early this year I drop by at the Ovi Store and downloaded some ring tones for the Nokia N82, that the time I got interested in Ovi Store.

Ovi Store is where you can go to, to find Apps, Games, Themes, Ring tones, Video Trailers, as add on to your Nokia Phone, for non wifi phone like my wife X3, you indicate your interest in a certain apps which will result in a SMS send to your phone and you have to call/sms back to get the apps, which mean you will incurs telecommunication costs. For Wifi Phone like the N82, and Nokia 5800 you can down loan direct to your phone.

While the Themes, Apps, Games, ring tones are limited in choice, You should have no problem installing these Themes, Apps, Games etc and such software should be virus free, unlike those from other websites which may be problematic.

Having Browse through the Ovi Store, I found a number of E Books as well as Graphic Novel, which are available for Free for the Nokia 5800, and as such have downloaded around 15 of them for lite reading and to while away the time (for waiting purpose)

The Nokia 5800 is suitable for Graphic Novel, due to the long screen, Have downloaded Atomic Dreams Part 1 and Part 2, while the Part 3 to 7 seem to have disappear from Ovi Store. Interesting Story line about Red Indians and the Atomic Bomb. You turn the page by tapping the side, but there is no page number, and it you exit you will have to page through all of it again.

E Book, As a avid reader, E Books definitely interest me, and have downloaded a bunch, all of them Classic (out of copyright), Alice in Wonderland, 20000 Leagues under the sea, A whole lot of Shylock Homes books (6), Pride and Prejudice, Wizard of Oz, Around the World in 80 days, A Christmas Carols, and so on.

Having read 20000 Leagues under the sea, before, I there for selected this e book as my first read. One you have open the apps, tapping on the book will open the first page, where all the chapter is listed. You turn the page by swiping toward right or left on the touch screen, and right at the bottom there is a line where you can advance by chapter. If you exit the book, the next time you reopen the apps, you will be brought to the last page you were at. A good feature.

As for the 20000 Leagues under the sea E Book, It’s was just like what I read before on hardcover. An enjoyable story.

Next I will be taking a look at the Games found in Ovi which can be downloaded free.

Further comments:

Please note, Ovi refresh it offering from time to time, so some apps mention here may disappear and new apps will come in from time to time, further it may not be applicable for your particular phone.

One other thing the ring tone that I downloaded for my Nokia N82, cannot work for my Nokia 5800, it seems to be lock to a specific phone.

A Nokia 5800 Review : Further Camera Test in Penang, Night Shots

A Nokia 5800 Review : Further Camera Test in Penang, Night Shots

Please note all photos resize to 640 by 480 mp, All photo taken in Night Mode, with out flash.

Photo 1 -

At Gurney Drive I tried out the Nokia 5800 and snap this long range shot of the Night Lights of Tanjung Tokong, Photo Recrop to Zoom in to the lights. Result just dots of lights only

Photo 2 –

A Mid Range shot of Evergreen Hotel frontage, Not too bad.

Photo 3

Another Long Range shot of the “New” Flamingo Hotel and Paradise Hotel signboard. I recrop the photo to zoom in to the signboard lights only. There is camera shake (Hand held shot) and you can see that it grainy

Verdict

For Night Shots, go for Short Range only with the Nokia 5800, and if there is a bit of light so much the better, Nite Mode is compulsory. other then that you are wasting time and effort

Lesson One, Long Range Night Shot do not work well, use your super zoom camera.

Lesson Two, Mid Range is OK , and will work best if there is a little bit of light.

Lesson Three. Long Range Night Shot need tripod, your hands are not steady enough.

Nokia 5800 vs The I Phone, A comparison

Nokia 5800 vs The I Phone, A comparison

@snapshots

I have seen reference to Nokia 5800 as a I phone killer on one of the websites (http://www.tube5800.com/), My Question is the Nokia 5800 that good?, It does sell well (till there is no stock in certain parts of this country). 1 . Does the Nokia 5800 sell more than the I phone? 2. Is the Nokia 5800 better in terms of Specifications 3. is the Nokia 5800 better then the I Phone in terms of customer Friendliness? 4. Brand Conscious? Which is better? Please correct me (via the comments if the specifications mention is wrong)

1. Numbers Sold?

I have read somewhere on the web that Nokia have sold 8 million units of Nokia 5800 from the launching date, however it seems that Apple have sold 13 million plus I phone in 2008 alone. (Well Apple only has one model while Nokia sell many different models) So the I phone have won in terms of sheer numbers sold .

2. Specifications? - info from http://www.phonegg.com/compare/24/Nokia-5800-vs-Apple-iPhone-3G.html and other sites

For Fun I did a comparison (info from the many internet web sites) comparing the 2 phones in terms of specification ie numbers and items that can be track.

Display : 360 by 640 vs 320 by 480 Nokia 5800 1, I Phone 0

Talk Time : 8.25 hrs vs 10 hrs Nokia 5800 1, I Phone 1

Standby Time: 406 hrs vs 300 hrs Nokia 5800 2, I Phone 1

Processor Speed : 434mhz vs 624 mhz Nokia 5800 2, I Phone 2

External memory : Micro SD Card vs Nil Nokia 5800 3, I Phone 2

Internal Memory : 81mb vs 16gb Nokia 5800 3, I Phone 3

Camera : 3.15 mp vs 2 Mp Nokia 5800 4, I Phone 3

Update : I Phone 3GS has 3mp camera

Flash : Twin Led VS Nil Nokia 5800 5, I Phone 3

Jawa : Yes vs Not Mention Nokia 5800 6, I Phone 3

Radio : Yes vs Not Mention Nokia 5800 7, I Phone 3

Weight: 109 grms vs 133 grms Nokia 5800 8, I Phone 3

Screen: 3.2 in vs 3.5 in Nokia 5800 8, I phone 4

I Phone have better specs at the Processor Speed (good lead), internal memory and in the talk time category. Nokia 5800 leads in the standby time, Display size pixels even with a smaller LED display size, have external memory capabilities, better camera specs and flash, capable of Jawa, Radio, and weight is lighter. Overall I would say that the Nokia 5800 is slightly better in specs.

3. Customer Friendliness

Nokia 5800 has Removable Batteries, Upgradeable Memory, Video Calls, Voice Recording etc

I Phone has lots of Apps, much more the Nokia 5800, also has I Tunes , which do not work in Malaysia Last I heard.

Nokia 5800 is much more pocket friendly then the I Phone, in Malaysia Price for a Nokia 5800 is around RM1K +-, while the I Phone is in the Region of RM2K plus for the 3G plus and is usually come lock in a data contract. The Nokia 5800 comes unlock and can be use in which ever service provider you are using or plan to use.

I do think that the Nokia 5800 is more user / customer friendly as you can upgrade memory via the micro sd card, change batteries at any time you want, have a slightly better camera and with flash. Jawa enable, with radio and most importantly much lighter on your pocket.

4. Brand Conscious

This is the place where the Nokia 5800 really loose out to the Apple I phone. Brand Conscious. People go “woo” when they see a I Phone, 5800 get practically no response at all. Apple Products do have a certain positive reputation, especially in terms of being a “Better” and “Superior” product especially when compared with Nokia or any other technology brand out there.

Verdict:

Is Nokia 5800 the I phone killer? I don’t think so, Apple I phone has too much brand conscious riding on it, too good reputation especially on the friendliness of the touch screen, for even a slightly superior in specification smart phone to dethrone it. (Now wait a moment, I am not saying that the Nokia 5800 is a superior smart phone to the I phone)

The only way the I phone can be dethrone is a much higher specification phone, which has not any faults or defects, better built quality and sold much cheaper then the I Phone, then it will stand a chance. Beside the Nokia 5800, there is now Samsung Ommi 2, Black Berry Storm 2, LG Xenon, HTC Hero, and many others challenging the I Phone. Phones with much higher specification such as 1G processor speed, 4.1 in screens, 12.1 mpixels cameras, and so on. see http://www.iphonekiller.com/

Actually even with much higher specs phones and cheaper prices, this phones or future phones may not even kill off the I Phone, Why? If Apple really start to be more friendly and bring in standard features, ie removable batteries, removable memory slots, flash, etc couple with their current Branding, they will remain in the lead for many years to come, I have stumble across a web that predicted 80 million I Phone will be sold by 2012. Wow.

A Nokia 5800 Review, Post #5, Camera Test - Outdoor Normal Conditions

A Nokia 5800 Review, Post #5, Camera Test - Outdoor Normal Conditions

There are many reviews of the Nokia 5800 out there, after all it’s not the latest phone on the market, if you want specification, tech details etc you have many many web sites out there. In my blog I will talk about the living with the device, how to set it up, how to use it for one own amusement, after all having spend a good sum of money on it, make full use of it as a eye candy or as best it can function.

To test out Photos under Normal Conditions, I took a series of 3 Photos from a particular locations under different lighting conditions.

Photo 1, is taken early in the morning with the rising sun almost shining strait on in to the camera lens, in very high contrast conditions.

Photo 2 is taken in normal conditions, with high contrast between shady and open areas.

Photo 3 is taken in Overcast Conditions.

Photo 4 is a close up of flowers (small ones) in shady condition. The Flower is around 5 in from the camera.

I have taken a verity of photos to test out the Nokia 5800 camera in situation where most ppl complain about the photos ie in low light condition. Here are 5 photos display with out adjustment other then resizing the photos to 640 by 480 pix.

Photo 1 is taken in the evening, without adjusting any settings in the camera ie in Full Auto Mode. Result a unattractive and very dark photo.

Photo 2, taken within one minute of Photo 1, a much attractive and brighter photo, the result of setting it to Nite Mode. ISO is on auto.

Phot0 3, in full darkness, but taken in a car. You can see that the vibration of the car engine results in "movement"

Photo 4, In Nite Mode, with the ISO on Auto, while grainy (I do find it acceptable), its definitely not as good as my former N82 (which is 5mp and have zenon flash). Overall OK
Photo 5, ISO reset to low, produce a slighly darker photo, but much sharper image of the "Lights" .

Low Light Photographs can be improve if you know how to do some simple adjustments

A Nokia 5800 Review, Post #3, Wifi, Browsing the Internet

A Nokia 5800 Review, Post #3, Wifi, Browsing the Internet

There are many reviews of the Nokia 5800 out there, after all it’s not the latest phone on the market, if you want specification, tech details etc you have many many web sites out there. In my blog I will talk about the living with the device, how to set it up, how to use it for one own amusement, after all having spend a good sum of money on it, make full use of it as a eye candy or as best it can function.

Today I am exploring the Nokia 5800 Wifi connectivity feature, and using it to browse the internet via the built in browser.

To enable the Wifi you have to tap the phone screen near the battery, and you will get all your connectivity options there, once the Wifi is enable, you can start Web browsing which will bring you to the book mark screen, or by tapping right at the bottom the “globe”, you can enter in the url you want.

(You can also go to the Menu “web” folder, to use the built in web application to connect to internet via your phone service provider.)

It’s better to use the phone in the landscape mode, especially if you have many things to search for ie you have to use the qwerty keyboard. What I did first is to Bookmark Google here, (to use Wifi) to enable me to search for website I will want to visit frequently with the 5800, and then book marking then book marking the web sites.

On the right hand side of the “standard” screen, at the bottom left you have the options and on the 2nd button from the top right you have further short cuts. You have similar choice here but at the shortcuts, you do not have to navigate to look for the options you want. (eg book mark this page, go to bookmark page, help, settings, go to full screen.

Viewing the Web page you basically have the standard view, page overview, and the full screen. Using the full screen mode will leave you without any buttons on the left to navigate, such as the back key etc. The only navigation option you have is back to the standard view. The Standard Screen is a bit small, but its still readable, the full screen is nice. Double tapping on the screen will enable zoom mode, a useful and thoughtful feature.

There are various settings which you can thinker around to fit what you want such as display no photo, font size etc. Just tap the option button at each level and you will find what you can do there.

Overall surfing the net, is quite smooth, you do have to wait a bit before the page downloads fully, navigating the page using the touch screen is neat, I do find that using my finger nail instead of the finger is more accurate and more responsive.

Comments

The Good : Auto off Wifi when leaving connectivity - Will save battery which is important

The Bad : In the Menu “web” folder (built in application) uses Edge/3g for connectivity even with Wifi presence, I am unable to set it to use Wifi only, however can connect via Wifi by going through the connectivity.

My Verdict : Can almost replace a lap top, its slower loading pages, and the screen is of course smaller, it can do what you want from a lap top other then for torrent downloading purpose.
